The UK has been flooded with cheap till rolls- lots of online companies offering deals too good to be true. We ourselves have been bombarded with offers for till roll paper 40% cheaper than what we can buy for in the UK. The sellers claim that they are able to undercut UK paper mills due to their manufacturers having lower costs in Turkey, India and China. We decided to test out their claims by accepting a few samples.
Here’s what we found when testing their samples –
SHORT MEASURES – the actual paper on these cheap imported rolls was extremely thick – meaning you get less paper per roll than you would do with the normal UK till roll. In our tests the imported till rolls had about 40% less paper than UK standard.
LOW QUALITY – the base paper of the imported rolls is low quality and generates excessive dust which will impact the life of the thermal print head meaning expensive repair or replacement costs down the line.
ERRATIC COATING – the imported till rolls we tested had very erratic coating with the till roll print lasting 7 days to 3 months. Quality UK paper has a life of 5 – 7 years image stability. There have been instances of imported till rolls having no coating – meaning they simply don’t print at all.
LARGE CORES – universally the imported till rolls we received had massive cores and a lot less actual till roll paper than we supply.
FULL OF BPA – the imported paper by and large has very high levels of BPA – nasty chemicals that have long term side effects. These papers are so potentially harmful that they are banned in the UK.
In essence these importers are ripping every one off. All of the techniques above are designed to give you less paper so they can offer a cheaper ‘per roll’ or ‘per box’ price. This is mildly irritating for us as we are having to quote against non like for like product, but for the actual retailer it’s a serious problem. At the very least you are getting ripped off – paying more for less paper. You will also have to buy up to twice as many boxes and suffer the frustration of changing rolls more frequently, whilst having more packaging to dispose. Further more you could be running the risk of damaging your equipment.
